An extended energy system model for renewable energy expansion planning: The net energy perspective

Authors:

Yong Yang, Hui Wang, Yang Bai

This study proposes an extended energy system model based on EnergyPLAN for renewable energy expansion planning. Conventional energy system models typically focus on minimizing economic costs while overlooking the net energy issue. This can decrease net energy availability and potentially undermine lifestyles and economic growth. To address this, the study integrates energy return on investment (EROI) feedback into the cost-minimization of energy systems by coupling the EnergyPLAN model, an EROI feedback module, and an optimization algorithm. The proposed model is then applied to China to investigate national renewable energy expansion pathways and to assess the EROI implications. Comparisons show the distinct advantages of this model in mitigating EROI declines and reducing renewable energy curtailment.
