Workshops for EnergyPLAN

The EnergyPLAN model is developed by the Sustainable Energy Planning Research group at Aalborg University in cooperation with PlanEnergi and EMD A/S. The research group studies energy planning and management in an interdisciplinary perspective. Focus is placed on energy planning in relation to technology, geography, economic and institutional conditions. The research conducted can be divided into three main areas of study:

  • Energy System Analysis
  • Feasibility studies
  • Public regulation viewed in the light of technological change

Advanced Energy System Analysis on the EnergyPLAN model (2026)

This PhD course gives an introduction to advanced energy system analysis using the EnergyPLAN model and gives you a chance to work on an energy modelling study of your own choice. After the course, you will be able to understand methodologies of advanced energy system analysis and use EnergyPLAN as a tool for energy system analyses.

Time and place

27 April, 28 April, 29 April and 30 April 2026: Onsite lectures and workshops in Aalborg
5 and 12 May 2026: online Q&A sessions
19 May 2026: online exam (mandatory)

In-person attendance is required for the four lectures in Aalborg, while Q&A sessions and exam are attended online.

Contents

The course starts with an introduction to EnergyPLAN (installation, using, constructing new data sets) and proceeds to focus on the use of the model in

  • sustainable cities and communities
  • technical analyses of large-scale integration of wind
  • analyses of exchange with external electricity markets
  • combinations of different renewable energy technologies
  • designing flexible energy systems using flexible technologies such as heat pumps, hydrogen storage, pumped storage etc.
  • district heating systems versus individual houses and zero energy buildings
  • designing energy systems based on multiple criteria
